Direct Hit ranks web sites according to "relevancy judgements" made by searchers. The more traffic your site gets (and the longer people stay on your site) the higher it is ranked at Direct Hit.
It means that Direct Hit is great for finding popular sites. It also means that Direct Hit is not great for finding newer sites.
Other than that, it's pretty much a straightforward engine.
Very few extras. Very little incentive for people to use it. It's a shame, because as a startup, it was very promising. AskJeeves bought Direct Hit in January of 2000 - and then (by their own admission) failed to capitalize on it. After AskJeeves had the Direct Hit technology running on the AskJeeves engine itself, they did not invest in further expanding the Direct Hit engine.
